Somebody asked me yesterday on how I deal with depression. Without a thought, the answer was “I run”. And if I run regularly, I almost never get depressed. The only time I get depressed is while I am nursing my hangover until Sunday afternoon…it’s a feeling of helplessness. Binging on beer is similar to the pointless high of bungee jumping. Sipping on beer is like running a race – you enjoy every moment of it and at the end of it, you are more energetic than tired.
Ryan Hall has been running 160 + miles every week to prepare for the Boston marathon. He views the Boston marathon as a battle and talks about the importance of choosing the right battles at the right time. By battles he refers to races such as 1 mile, 5ks, 10ks, half marathons etc. Kara Goucher mentions that she hates tapering and calls it the t-word. These guys are hardcore and only when I read about stuff like this, I wish I started track and field at a younger age.
The Boston marathon fever is catching up and the race happens on April 20th this year. It is supposed to be the greatest of all marathons and people spend years to just qualify for the race. The top male contenders include 2008 Chicago champion Evans Cheruiyot of Kenya, Olympian and 2009 Houston winner Deriba Merga of Ethiopia, and top American and Olympian Ryan Hall.
