Despite my attempt to not drink any alcohol for the next ten days, I ended up downing 4 pints of beer in this place called Road Trip. My guilt only hit me when the alarm cracked at 7 am and it was mandatory to get out on a run. Jogged the first 2km and then paced a bit for the next 5 km or so followed by a 1km warm down. To chase the sub 40 goal, it is crucial that I stay off the beer and run my ass off for the next 40 days. I have a feeling that this is going to be harder than the race itself.
Why this obsession for a sub 40 minute 10k? Boston marathon requires a qualification time of 3 hours 10 min for my age category and it is only possible to break into this time, if I manage to do the 10k in 40 minutes. Runners who run Boston have their heads higher than other runners because they have not just trained to run the Boston but they have trained to run a marathon before Boston to qualify for the Boston. It will be good to prove to yourself that you belong there. It is like getting into Harvard for its MBA program. You might not want to be there but you still want to just know that you can be there if you like. The option value matters more than anything else. Boston 2010 will be a good goal to aim for and it will be a objective motivating enough to live healthy for the next one year at least.
