Strategic Goals and Tactical Goals

Strategic goal is the overall goal of an organization and is usually referred as a long-term goal. It is usually a measure of performance and achievement for those working in an organization. Tactical goals are those that are used to achieve the strategic goals. Ending the race within the time targeted is the strategic goal and reaching particular mile markers within specified times (5k in 20 min, 10k in 45 min…) is the tactical goal.

When you train to run a race, the race itself is a strategic goal. When you start training for a marathon, the marathon itself is a strategic goal and the shorter races during the season are intermittent tactical goals. Although one should aim to achieve his tactical goals, one should never lose sight of the strategic goal. What this means is that one should not kill himself/herself over results in the shorter races but should keep in mind an injury free season to achieve his personal best in the marathon (or the race you are training for) itself. The biggest mistake I made was during the Auroville marathon is that I ran my personal best in the midnight half marathon and am having to pay for it with the injury. Clearly, this was a mistake but the only way to learn how to run is to keep experimenting and one will find the answer.
