Every time I traveled to Mumbai, about how easily vulnerable the city can be to terrorist attacks. About six million people travel by trains every single day and there are absolutely no security checks. You could possibly find one cop (who is usually dozing) for every five thousand passengers. So, when I heard about the attacks last night, I was barely surprised and my reaction just as though I expected it.
The Prime minister and the president as usual condemned the attacks and politicians provided the affected families with compensation. According to the prime minister, security has “now” become a priority. There is expected to be heavy security checks for the next two weeks and then things will get back to normal. An actor/ socialite or politician is going to be arrested with regard to the blasts but verdict will be in his favor or the case will be prolonged long enough till the accused is dead….Terrorist attacks will continue in the next decade.
To avoid this from happening, this is what should happen:
• Each Indian questions their local MLA on the security measures/ checks in their area.
• The media raises regular questions on lapses in security issues.
• We come up with a five year structured plan to destroy terrorists ( 2007-2011 – no terrorist mission or something like that !!! … We will be the first country to plan and succeed if we do this … great vote bank too!!! )
• Invest portion of defense expenditure on security equipment.
• We attach greater probability and weights to communities that have more terrorists and put them under a watch list.
Sure, the terrorists are going to show us that they are not scared of us their cheap, cowardly, guerrilla warfare techniques and that will require government intelligence agencies to be more proactive – I am not sure if we are ready for this battle just yet.
