A while back, we got speaking on switching on and off. Its a skill to have that not many folks can manage. Those who can do that have obviously mastered the game.
Personally for me, switching on and off is impossible. I used to be able to do it when I was younger but I just cannot do it anymore.
To run almost in the state of Zen, requires all your energy. Running a half marathon or anything less than that is easy. You can slack off a little bit and still come up with a decent timing or atleast finish the damn thing. However, the full marathon is a different game altogether.
To run a full marathon, you need to run with complete focus almost 4-5 days a week atleast. The days you don't run, you need to focus on things that help you to run such as stretching, strengthening. Your diet is almost rigid and sleep and rest is mandatory for recovery. Mentally, you need to be calm and composed, constantly focusing and visualizing the finish line. And to avoid getting bored of this routine for 16 weeks, you need to add variety to your days without tresspassing the parameters. The whole thing is more complex than anyone can comprehend.
Why do we do it? Maybe its the joy of bonding with people using pain as a common thread, maybe its the challenge of staying disciplined or maybe its just plain insanity !!
