Asian-American groups are slamming sportswear leader adidas for marketing a trainer bearing interpreting it as a racist image.
Adidas is selling a line of shoes bearing an image designed by an artist who has repeatedly used the same image depicting Asian youth in racist contexts. The image is of an Asian youth with bowl-cut hair, pig nose and buck teeth. Asian-Americans say the offensive image, similar to ones used in anti-Chinese political cartoons in the past, perpetuates a negative stereotype of Asians. Several websites and bloggers have been calling adidas a racist company. Over the past few months, cartoons have caused so much havoc that we may see a law on certain kinds of animation very soon. Imagine having restrictions on how Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck or Goofy could look. For heaven’s sake it’s just a bloody cartoon - My two year old neighbor would possibly amuse herself by looking at it.
